Changing volumeid windows

I think a lot of the problem is confusion about the terminology. The VolumeId and Disk Signature is very different. If you check against the disk signature using diskpart , you'll notice it will be completely different. Normally when a disk is brought online with either a VolumeId or DiskId conflict, Windows will automatically change the offending Id.

In a clustered environment as the DiskId will not be automatically changed as the DiskId is how the cluster identifies clustered disks however it will change the VolumeId if there is a conflict. The problem lies if there no conflict on the node that the disk is originally added to but then later you attempt to migrate the disk to a node where there is a conflicting VolumeId.

At this point the volume will fail. Now with CSV's the volumes are always active on all nodes that's the whole point of CSVs therefore the first time you bring up the new volume with different signature but identical VolumeId it will be automatically changed and conflict removed as you can see from your screenshot above.

Now Microsoft have provided a tool to change DiskId diskpart but not VolumeId and therefore in the instance where there is a conflict in VolumeIds, your cluster will not be able to bring up the Volume on another node. The Guid is usually almost exactly the same except for digits so it's easy to miss if you aren't looking closely.

I can't speak for how Windows does this, but it definitely isn't happening on the NetApp storage. It works with shared disks mounted as drive letters or mount points as well. I just happened to have a CSV handy. Office Office Exchange Server. Not an IT pro? Windows Server TechCenter. Sign in. United States English. Ask a question. Quick access. Search related threads. The problem as stated in the question is with VolumeId not DiskId. I don't think that even the "clever" scripting from NetApp can solve this one. Saturday, October 1, PM. It would be better to point out that the volume serial number is a general identifyer for all volumes, not only for a disk and that what you are talking about here, is only the volume serial number of the first volume partition of a disk.

I only restored this partition with Back up files made with Clonezilla Live in default mode. The 2 numbers differ by only one character …??? Brandon Lee April 22, am. I had changed my serial id on Windows After doing so I cannot play media such as YouTube. Any help will be appreciated.

Unfortunately I think that is a different ID than what people here are talking about. If you type 'vol c:' at a command prompt you will see a Serial number that is unrelated to the uniqueid. One of the giveaways is that each partition has an ID, but uniqueid only deals with a disk that may contain several partitions.

I believe the number being discussed here lives in the VBR. JimH June 1, am. I found a more reliable solution. It uses a command that comes with Windows, and therefore does not require downloading anything. As you will see, though, there are more steps involved, but it worked for me when volumeid did not. The disk will not have the usual names and labels that you're accustomed to from the Windows Explorer interface, so you will have to recognize them by their sizes. Note that "list disk" actually lists the physical disks, and not the partitions that you may have assigned drive letters.

This means that if you have 2 physical disks, with 3 partitions on each, so that you have drives C:, D:, E:, F:, G: and H:, "list disk" will only show "Disk 0" and "Disk 1". Somchai December 2, am. I have tried this with Win 8. I type in the following command:. I forgot to mention that all three drives have been scanned and no errors were detected. All three drives seem to function just fine — as long as only one of the three are connected.

All three drives have identical Volume Serial Numbers. I have two USB ports, and if I connect any two of these drives, the system recognizes only one of them. I have a fourth external drive that has a unique serial number. I can connect this drive and any of the other three at the same time with no problem whatsoever. Jim January 9, pm.
