I would think that in most scenarios, the costs accociated with not using XNA have got to be more than a video adapter. You will get help if you need it , whether it be in the official forums or just by watching one of the many videos by YouTubers such as Brackeys or Blackthornprod. You could get by using one of the visual scripting plugins from the asset store like PlayMaker. Not the easiest to start with, but totally doable.
