Tune your senses to different kinds of signals. Page Scanning The Terrain Scanning the Terrain Off-road driving can take you over many different kinds of terrain. You need to be familiar with the terrain and its many different features. Here are some things to consider. Surface Conditions: Off-roading can take you over hard-packed dirt, gravel, rocks, grass, sand, mud, snow, or ice.
Page When you drive over bumps, rocks, or other obstacles, the wheels can leave the ground. If this happens, even with one or two wheels, you cannot control the vehicle as well or at all. Because you will be on an unpaved surface, it is especially important to avoid sudden acceleration, sudden turns, or sudden braking. Page Approaching A Hill Approaching a Hill When you approach a hill, you need to decide if it is one of those hills that is just too steep to climb, descend, or cross.
Steepness can be hard to judge. On a very small hill, for example, there may be a smooth, constant incline with only a small change in elevation where you can easily see all the way to the top. Page Driving Uphill Driving Uphill Once you decide you can safely drive up the hill, you need to take some special steps. Page What should I do if my vehicle stalls, or is about to stall, and I cannot make it up the hill?
If this happens, there are some things you should do, and there are some things you must not do. Page Suppose, after stalling, I try to back down the hill and decide I just cannot do it. What should I do? Leave the vehicle and go get some help.
Page Are there some things I should not do when driving down a hill? These are important because if you ignore them you could lose control and have a serious accident. A hill that is not too steep to drive down may be too steep to drive across. If this happens, you have to decide whether to try to drive across the incline.
Page What if I am driving across an incline that is not too steep, but I hit some loose gravel and start to slide downhill. If you feel your vehicle starting to slide sideways, turn downhill. This should help straighten out the vehicle and prevent the side slipping. Page Driving in Mud, Sand, Snow, or Ice When you drive in mud, snow, or sand, the wheels will not get good traction.
You cannot accelerate as quickly, turning is more difficult, and you will need longer braking distances. It is best to use a low gear when you are in mud —the deeper the mud, the lower the gear. Deep water can sweep your vehicle downstream and you and your passengers could drown.
If it is only shallow water, it can still wash away the ground from under your tires, and you could lose traction and roll the vehicle over. After operation in mud or sand, have the brake linings cleaned and checked. These substances can cause glazing and uneven braking. Page No one can see as well at night as in the daytime.
But as we get older these differences increase. A year-old driver might require at least twice as much light to see the same thing at night as a year-old. On a wet road, you cannot stop, accelerate, or turn as well because your tire-to-road traction is not as good as on dry roads. And, if your tires do not have much tread left, you will get even less traction. They may not work as well in a quick stop and may cause pulling to one side. You could lose control of the vehicle.
After driving through a large puddle of water or a car wash, apply the brake pedal lightly until the brakes work normally. Never drive through water that is slightly lower than the underbody of your vehicle. Page City Driving City Driving One of the biggest problems with city streets is the amount of traffic on them.
You will want to watch out for what the other drivers are doing and pay attention to traffic signals. Page Freeway Driving Freeway Driving Mile for mile, freeways — also called thruways, parkways, expressways, turnpikes, or superhighways — are the safest of all roads. But they have their own special rules. The most important advice on freeway driving is: Keep up with traffic and keep to the right. Drive at the same speed most of the other drivers are driving.
Expect to move slightly slower at night. When you want to leave the freeway, move to the proper lane well in advance. If you miss your exit, do not, under any circumstances, stop and back up. Or is it just plain falling asleep at the wheel? Call it highway hypnosis, lack of awareness, or whatever. There is something about an easy stretch of road with the same scenery, along with the hum of the tires on the road, the drone of the engine, and the rush of the wind against the vehicle that can make you sleepy.
Page If you drive regularly in steep country, or if you are planning to visit there, here are some tips that can make your trips safer and more enjoyable. Do not swing wide or cut across the center of the road. Drive at speeds that let you stay in your own lane.
There could be something in your lane, like a stalled car or an accident. And, if you will be driving under severe conditions, include a small bag of sand, a piece of old carpet, or a couple of burlap bags to help provide traction. Try not to break the fragile traction. If you accelerate too fast, the drive wheels will spin and polish the surface under the tires even more. Page You can run the engine to keep warm, but be careful.
This can cause deadly CO carbon monoxide gas to get inside. CO could overcome you and kill you. You cannot see it or smell it, so you might not know it is in your vehicle. Let the heater run for a while. Then, shut the engine off and close the window almost all the way to preserve the heat. Start the engine again and repeat this only when you feel really uncomfortable from the cold. That will clear the area around the front wheels.
If your vehicle has traction control, you should turn the system off. Page The recovery hook is located at the rear of your vehicle. It can only be used for pulling the vehicle out if it is stuck, not for towing the vehicle. This weight is called the vehicle capacity weight and includes the weight of all occupants, cargo, and all nonfactory-installed options. Page Towing If you put things inside your vehicle — like suitcases, tools, packages, or anything else — they will go as fast as the vehicle goes.
If you have to stop or turn quickly, or if there is a crash, they will keep going. Page Recreational Vehicle Towing Recreational Vehicle Towing Recreational vehicle towing means towing your vehicle behind another vehicle — such as behind a motorhome.
These vehicles may also be towed by putting the front wheels on a dolly. Page As an example, if you initially perform the lubrication procedure and tow your vehicle for three hours, then park for four hours, the lubrication procedure will need to be performed again, prior to dinghy towing the vehicle.
Page Once you have reached your destination, do the following: 1. Set the parking brake. Turn the ignition key to LOCK and remove the key from the ignition.
Page To tow your front-wheel-drive vehicle from the front with two wheels on the ground, do the following: 1. Put the front wheels on a dolly. For example, if the trailer is too heavy, the brakes may not work well — or even at all. You and your passengers could be seriously injured. Page Weight of the Trailer How heavy can a trailer safely be? It should never weigh more than 1, lbs kg. But even that can be too heavy.
It depends on how you plan to use your rig. For example, speed, altitude, road grades, outside temperature and how much your vehicle is used to pull a trailer are all important. Page The trailer rating should be: You can expect tongue weight to be at least 10 percent of trailer weight lbs kg and because the weight is applied well behind the rear axle, the effect on the rear axle will be greater than just the weight itself, as much as 1.
Page Since tongue weight is usually at least 10 percent of total loaded trailer weight, you can expect that the largest trailer your vehicle can properly handle is 6, lbs 2 kg.
It is important that you make sure your vehicle does not exceed any of its ratings — Page Safety Chains You should always attach chains between your vehicle and your trailer. Cross the safety chains under the tongue of the trailer so that the tongue will not drop to the road if it becomes separated from the hitch.
Instructions about safety chains may be provided by the hitch manufacturer or by the trailer manufacturer. Page Following Distance Stay at least twice as far behind the vehicle ahead as you would when driving your vehicle without a trailer. This can help you avoid situations that require heavy braking and sudden turns. Page Thus, you may think drivers behind you are seeing your signal when they are not.
Driving on Grades Notice: Do not tow on steep continuous grades exceeding 6 miles 9. Extended, higher than normal engine and transmission temperatures may result and damage your vehicle. When the chocks are in place, release the regular brakes until the chocks absorb the load. Reapply the regular brakes. Page Trailer Wiring Trailer Wiring Additional wire length has been provided for connecting trailer wiring to your vehicle.
The wires are fused in both the underhood and instrument fuse block. Page Section 5 Electrical System Page Service You will get genuine Saturn parts and Saturn-trained and supported service people. We hope you will want to keep your Saturn vehicle all Saturn. Genuine Saturn parts have one of these marks. Page Adding Equipment To The Outside Of Use of the recommended fuel is an important part of the proper maintenance of your vehicle.
Gasoline Octane Use regular unleaded gasoline with a posted octane rating of 87 or higher. If this occurs, return to your authorized Saturn retailer for diagnosis.
If it is determined that the condition is caused by the type of fuel used, repairs may not be covered by your warranty. Page Fuels In Foreign Countries Gasolines containing oxygenates, such as ethers and ethanol, and reformulated gasolines may be available in your area.
To help avoid injuries to you and others, read and follow all the instructions on the pump island. Turn off your engine when you are refueling.
Page To remove the fuel cap, turn it slowly counterclockwise. The fuel cap has a spring in it; if the cap is released too soon, it will spring back to the right. Static electricity discharge from the container can ignite the gasoline vapor. You can be badly burned and your vehicle damaged if this occurs. Keep hands, clothing, and tools away from any underhood electric fan. Pull the handle with this symbol on it. Then go to the front of the vehicle and lift up on the secondary hood release lever.
Page A. Engine Oil Dipstick. Engine Oil Fill Cap. Page When you open the hood on the 3. Engine Oil Dipstick Out of View. In order to get an accurate reading, the oil must be warm and the vehicle must be on level ground. The engine oil dipstick handle is a yellow loop for the 2.
Page If the oil is below the MIN minimum mark for the 2. But you must use the right kind. Page For Vehicles with the 3. These numbers on an oil container show its viscosity, or thickness. Do not use other viscosity oils such as SAE 20W Oils meeting these requirements should also have the starburst This is based on engine revolutions and engine temperature, and not on mileage.
Based on driving conditions, the mileage at which an oil change will be indicated can vary considerably. Do not let used oil stay on your skin for very long. Clean your skin and nails with soap and water, or a good hand cleaner. Disconnect the hose. Unscrew the clamp on the air duct hose. Release the clamps on the side of the air cleaner assembly.
Turn the cover upward to disengage the cover hinges. Page Automatic Transaxle Fluid Wipe all dust from inside of the housing and inspect the air cleaner and air outlet duct for cracks, cuts and deterioration. The air outlet duct must be replaced if damaged.
Page Checking the Fluid Level Prepare your vehicle as follows: 1. Park your vehicle on a level place. Warm the engine to normal operating temperature until the electric radiator fan turns on at least once.
See Recommended Fluids and Lubricants on page Page Hydraulic Clutch Hydraulic Clutch The hydraulic clutch linkage in your vehicle is self-adjusting. The hydraulic clutch system does not have its own reservoir. See Brakes on page for more information. If you use this coolant mixture, you do not need to add anything else.
See Engine Compartment Overview on page for more information on location. CAUTION: Turning the surge tank pressure cap when the engine and radiator are hot can allow steam and scalding liquids to blow out and burn you badly. Stay away from the engine if you see or hear steam coming from it. Just turn it off and get everyone away from the vehicle until it cools down. Page Cooling System If you no longer have the overheat warning, you can drive. Just to be safe, drive slower for about ten minutes.
If the warning does not come back on, you can drive normally. If the warning continues and you have not stopped, pull over, stop, and park your vehicle right away. If the coolant inside the coolant surge tank is boiling, do not do anything else until it cools down. Failure to follow this procedure could cause your engine to overheat and be severely damaged.
If you have not found a problem yet, check to see if coolant is visible in the surge tank. Plain water, or some other liquid such as alcohol, can boil before the proper coolant mixture will.
With plain water or the wrong mixture, your engine could get too hot but you would not get the overheat warning. Page 1. You can remove the coolant surge tank pressure cap when the cooling system, including the coolant surge tank pressure cap and upper radiator hose, is no longer hot. Turn the pressure cap slowly counterclockwise about one-quarter of a turn. If you hear a hiss, wait for that to stop. Page Windshield Washer Fluid 4. With the coolant surge tank pressure cap off, start the engine and let it run until you can feel the upper radiator hose getting hot.
Watch out for the engine cooling fan. By this time, the coolant level inside the coolant surge tank may be lower. See Engine Compartment Overview on page for reservoir location. See Engine Compartment Overview on page for the location of the reservoir. Page Brake Wear Your vehicle has front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. Disc brake pads have built-in wear indicators that make a high-pitched warning sound when the brake pads are worn and new pads are needed.
This could be a sign that brake service might be required. Brake Adjustment Every time you make a moderate brake stop, the brakes adjust for wear. Page Battery Battery Your vehicle has a maintenance free battery. We recommend an ACDelco replacement battery.
See Engine Compartment Overview on page for battery location. Warning: Battery posts, terminals, and related accessories contain lead and lead compounds, chemicals known to the State of California Be sure to use the following steps to do it safely. Page Notice: If you leave your radio or other accessories on during the jump starting procedure, they could be damaged.
The repairs would not be covered by your warranty. Always turn off your radio and other accessories when jump starting your vehicle. Remote Negative B. Positive Terminal 3. People have been hurt doing this, and some have been blinded.
Be sure the battery has enough water. You do not need to add water to the battery installed in your new vehicle. Page 6. Do not let the other end touch metal. Page All-Wheel Drive Notice: If the jumper cables are connected or removed in the wrong order, electrical shorting may occur and damage the vehicle. Always connect and remove the jumper cables in the correct order, making sure that the cables do not touch each other or other metal.
Page Transfer Case 3. See Scheduled Maintenance on page How to Check Lubricant A. Fill Plug B. Page Headlamp Aiming Headlamp Aiming The visual optical headlamp aiming system has been preset at the factory and should need no further adjustment. However, if the vehicle is damaged in an accident, the aim of the headlamps may be affected and adjustment may be necessary.
Page To adjust the vertical aim: 1. Open the hood. See Hood Release on page for more information. Locate the aim dot on the lens of the low-beam headlamp.
Measure the distance from the ground to the aim dot on the low-beam headlamp. Record the distance. Page 7. Locate the vertical headlamp aiming screws, which are under the hood near each headlamp assembly. The adjustment screw can be turned with a 6 mm socket. Turn the vertical aiming screw until the headlamp beam is aimed to the horizontal tape line. For any bulb changing procedure not listed in this section, contact your retailer.
Page To replace one of the headlamp bulbs, use the following procedure. Page 4. Push the locking tab toward the rear of the vehicle with the tool to lift the headlamp bracket lower arm. Follow Steps 1 through 6 under Headlamps on page to access the front turn signal or parking lamp. Turn the bulb to be replaced counterclockwise to remove it from the headlamp assembly. Disconnect the rear washer hose from the rear washer nozzle. Open the liftgate. See Liftgate on page for more information.
Remove the two screws retaining the taillamp assembly. Slide the taillamp 4. Remove the two screws holding each of the license plate lamps to the fascia. Turn and pull the license plate lamp forward through the fascia opening.
Page To replace the windshield wiper blade assembly do the following: 1. Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield. Push the release lever B to disengage the hook and push the wiper arm A out of the blade C. Page Tires If you ever have questions about your tire warranty and where to obtain service, see your Saturn Warranty booklet for details. The load index can range from 1 to See Loading Your Vehicle on page Intended Outboard Sidewall: The side of an asymmetrical tire, that must always face outward when mounted on a vehicle.
Radial Ply Tire: A pneumatic tire in which the ply cords that extend to the beads are laid at 90 degrees to the centerline of the tread. It is not. If the tires have an all-season tread design, the TPC spec number will be followed by an MS for mud and snow.
Page Uniform Tire Quality Grading Uniform Tire Quality Grading Quality grades can be found where applicable on the tire sidewall between tread shoulder and maximum section width. A tire marked C may have poor traction performance. Page Wheel Alignment And Tire Balance Wheel Alignment and Tire Balance The tires and wheels on your vehicle were aligned and balanced carefully at the factory to give you the longest tire life and best overall performance.
Adjustments to wheel alignment and tire balancing will not be necessary on a regular basis. However, if you notice unusual tire wear or your vehicle pulling to one side or the other, the alignment may need to be checked. Page If you need to replace any of your wheels, wheel bolts or wheel nuts, replace them only with new Saturn original equipment parts.
This way, you will be sure to have the right wheel, wheel bolts and wheel nuts for your vehicle. They can damage your vehicle because there is not enough clearance. Tire chains used on a vehicle without the proper amount of clearance can cause damage to the brakes, suspension, or other vehicle parts.
If air goes out of a tire, it is much more likely to leak out slowly. The vehicle can slip off the jack and roll over or fall on you or other people. To access the tools, do the following: 1. Page To access the spare tire, do the following: 1. Page 5. Remove the wheel retainer bolt holding down the spare tire by turning it counterclockwise.
Remove the compact spare tire. See Compact Spare Tire on page for more information. The tools you will be using include the jack A and wheel wrench B. For steel wheels with full plastic covers and aluminum wheels with large circular center caps, do the following: 1. Do not place the jack under a body panel.
The lower body panel has an arrow to aid in locating the jacking location. Page CAUTION: Lifting a vehicle and getting under it to do maintenance or repairs is dangerous without the appropriate safety equipment and training.
If it is used for anything else, you or others could be badly injured or killed if the vehicle slips off the jack. Remove all of the wheel nuts. The wheel could come off and cause an accident. Page 8. Remove any rust or 9. Place the compact spare tire on the wheel-mounting surface. Because the nuts might come loose.
This could lead to an accident. Be sure to use the correct wheel nuts. If you have to replace them, be sure to get new GM original equipment wheel nuts. In a sudden stop or collision, loose equipment could strike someone. Store all these in the proper place. Page Compact Spare Tire 4. Screw the threaded wheel stow rod onto the spare tire bracket. Page Appearance Care And do not mix the compact spare tire or wheel with other wheels or tires. Keep the spare tire and its wheel together.
Using them can damage your vehicle and can damage the chains too. Saturate a lint-free, clean white cloth with water or club soda. Wring the cloth to remove excess moisture. Start on the outside edge of the soil and gently rub toward the center. Continue cleaning, using a clean area of the cloth each time it becomes soiled. It is very easy to use and support is always free.
